Pythons Fall Short to Holy Innocents

By Dunn Neugebauer

Trailing by as many as 11 in the second half and by nine with under six minutes to play, the Holy Innocents’ boys rallied for a 47-45 win Saturday over Paideia at HIES. With the win, Coach Terry Kelly’s squad upped its record to 10-6.

The boys got a big lift in the final stanza on a 3-pointer from senior Alex Watkins. Watkins led the scoring with 20 points and also pulled eight rebounds. Another key was point guard Hamilton Bailey, who scored all 16 of his points in the second half. He was 7-for-7 from the free throw line and also tallied four assists. Kramer Deans had a big night inside, chipping in with seven points.

Despite the offense, it was the other side of the ball that impressed Coach Kelly.

“We have preached defense all season and (tonight) our defensive composure helped us erase an 11-point second half deficit,” Kelly said. “This was a complete team effort in limiting the #8-ranked team to only 11 fourth quarter points. At this point in the season, this is a signature win for us with the hope that we continue to work towards the goal of competing for a state playoff berth.”
